We finally know what Will Muschamp’s role is on Kirby Smart’s Georgia football team.

When former South Carolina head coach Will Muschamp was showing up to work at his alma mater’s football facilities, we all wondered what exactly his role was on Kirby Smart’s Georgia football staff.

Muschamp preceded Smart as a defensive back in the 1990s at the University of Georgia. Despite often being coaching competitors, Muschamp and Smart have a great friendship, so it was not a surprise that Muschamp resurfaced on Smart’s staff. Smart let it be known on Wednesday that Muschamp will be serving as a defensive analyst on his 2021 Bulldogs staff, making $300,000.

Look for Will Muschamp to play a big role with Georgia’s rebuilding defense.

Muschamp’s son Jackson plays quarterback for the Dawgs, so he is all-in on Georgia this season, or at least until he finds his next coordinator or head-coaching role. What Muschamp can do for Smart is be an extra set of eyes to spot things to be fixed on defense, especially on a secondary that lost six players to the 2021 NFL Draft. This is Muschamp’s position group of strength.

When we think of the offensive/defensive analyst role on a college team, the first program we think of is the Alabama Crimson Tide. Nick Saban regularly takes failed head coaches and hires them to temporary positions they are overqualified for. The Saban method of coaching rehabilitation works. While this is a it different, Muschamp is a great addition to the Georgia team.

By brining in a former SEC head coach, Georgia’s coaching staff just got even more credible.
