With the Minnesota Vikings championship window closing fast, finding the right offensive coordinator is key.

The clock is ticking as loud as a Gjallarhorn in Minnesota.

Minnesota has only made the playoffs once in the three seasons Kirk Cousins has been its quarterback, and the once wide-open championship window is slamming shut.

All hope is not lost though. The Vikings drafted a superstar wide receiver in Justin Jefferson last season, and with a full offseason to settle in as Minnesota’s new No. 1 target, there’s still a decent chance the Vikings can pull off a Super Bowl run.

But in addition to the issues with Cousins, the Vikings will be entering the season with their sixth new offensive coordinator since the 2014 season. Gary Kubiak, who had been in the gig since 2019, retired in January and left a sizable vacancy on the Minnesota sideline.

Jefferson, though, thinks he has a good idea of who the replacement will be.

“I think Klint [Kubiak] is going to come in and do the same or even better,” Jefferson told FanSided’s Mark Carman.

Minnesota hasn’t officially named a replacement for Gary Kubiak, but there hasn’t been a ton of movement outside of halls in Eagan. No big names have been floated as possibilities to run take over running the offense, which leads one to believe that transitioning from one Kubiak to the next makes sense for the Vikings short-term championship window.

Vikings Rumors: Who is Klint Kubiak and why is he a big deal?

One key benefit of having the junior Kubiak replace his father as offensive coordinator would be continuity. Jefferson believes that while a younger Kubiak would be calling plays, not much else would have to change.

“If he does [get the offensive coordinator job] it’s pretty much going to be the same offense, and we probably wouldn’t have to go through a whole new offense.”

Not having to spend an offseason learning a new offense seems to be in line with the Vikings plans of seeing how close to a Super Bowl they can get with the pieces currently in place.

Klint has been on the Vikings staff serving under his father as Quarterbacks Coach since 2019, and before that was with his father in Denver.

Beyond promoting Kubiak to keep continuity with playcalling, the optics of letting the guy responsible for working with Kirk Cousins in charge of running the offense is a major endorsement. Questions about Cousins viability as the Vikings leader started being asked last year and only intensified with a losing season in 2020.

Cousins might not be the quarterback of the future in Minnesota, but the Vikings need to put themselves in a position to win now. Keeping the offense in the Kubiak family business isn’t the flashiest move, but if it means setting the Vikings up for a winning year, no one will be complaining come next January.
