4. Worst quarterbacks to win the Super Bowl – Nick Foles

The book is still being written on Nick Foles but he has had quite an interesting career. Elevated to the starting job for the Philadelphia Eagles in 2013, Foles became a Pro Bowler in Chip Kelly’s offense but regressed the following year before a trade to the St. Louis Rams.

Foles spent a rough year in St. Louis and contemplated retirement before Andy Reid signed him to be his backup quarterback in Kansas City. That year revitalized Foles, who ended up back in Philadelphia in 2017, setting him up for one of the most remarkable postseason runs in NFL history.

The Eagles raced to the NFL’s best record behind an MVP-level performance from Carson Wentz before he tore his ACL late in the season. Foles took over and guided Philadelphia through the playoffs to its first Super Bowl championship, winning MVP honors after shredding the New England defense for 373 yards passing with three touchdowns and a memorable touchdown catch that came to be known as the Philly Special.

The Super Bowl run raised expectations for Foles, who took over for an injured Wentz again in 2018 to lead a playoff run he was able to parlay into an expensive free agent contract in Jacksonville. Foles has crashed back to Earth since then, flaming out in Jacksonville and getting dealt to the Bears in 2020, where he was an average starter before getting injured again.
