The Chiefs are fortunate to head into Super Bowl 55 without a ton of new injury concerns. One big-name playmaker is still questionable for the big game though.

Super Bowl 55 projects to be a star-studded matchup between two of the NFL’s best teams. Fortunately for the Chiefs, they head into the season’s biggest game with a relatively clean injury report.

The team issued its final injury update prior to the Super Bowl on Friday afternoon. Both Eric Fisher and Willie Gay were officially ruled out by Kansas City. The inclusion of both names on the list was no surprise given the respective injuries they face.

The only noteworthy piece of information to come out of the report was Sammy Watkins’ designation as “questionable” for Sunday’s game. His status for the Super Bowl will likely come down to how he looks during pre-game warmups. The talented wide receiver hasn’t suited up for the Chiefs since suffering a calf injury in his team’s Week 16 encounter with the Falcons.

Sammy Watkins remains a question mark on the Chiefs injury report

Watkins’ ability to play in the Super Bowl likely won’t change Andy Reid’s offensive game plan. Kansas City will place an emphasis on getting the ball out of Patrick Mahomes’ hands quickly to help neutralize Tampa Bay’s talented group of pass-rushers. That puts a lot of responsibility onto the team’s smaller, quicker wideouts like Tyreek Hill and Mecole Hardman.

Having Watkins in the mix would put more pressure on the Buccaneers secondary on intermediate and deep routes. He’s never lived up to the hype he enjoyed coming into the NFL after a prolific collegiate career at Clemson, but he still possesses an outstanding combination of size and speed for the wide receiver position. That makes him a deep threat opposing safeties have to be cognizant of whenever he’s on the field.

The Chiefs’ coaching staff will face a nervous wait to see whether or not Watkins can factor into their gameplan for Super Bowl 55. If he does manage to recover in time, he gives Kansas City one more weapon to utilize in their passing game.
