David Price responded to a report that MLB is looking to “deaden” baseballs for the 2021 season.

It is no secret that MLB home run numbers have been up in a big way the past few years. In 2015 there were a total of 4,909 home runs. Cut to 2019 and that number ballooned to 6,776.

This was an open secret and MLB pitchers had a sense something was up. Now a report has dropped from The Athletic stating the ball was in fact changed by Rawlings. The report, from Ken Rosenthal and Eno Sarris, also states the league will “deaden” the ball for the 2021 season.

Los Angeles Dodgers pitcher David Price could only laugh when he saw this report. His tweet about the news likely summed up the feeling plenty of pitchers had after noticing a clear difference with the ball.

David Price calls out the change

Pitchers at the MLB level have spent their whole life handling a baseball. Any slight change is going to be noticed and as Price says, the pitchers knew something was different.

Price’s tweet even got a response from one of the stars of the game in Mike Trout. However, the change shouldn’t affect him all that much.

The “steroid era” famously brought inflated home run numbers to the league. The totals then dipped back down until recently when the 6,000-mark was broken in 2017. But this change occurring because of a modified baseball seems to cheapen the results in a way.

Hitting 30 home runs is not the same accomplishment it once was if so many people are doing just that. Changing the ball back should help home runs be more valued once again and also prevent pitchers from feeling like they are being put at a disadvantage for the sake of the league wanting more excitement.
