Red Sox make savvy pickup with Marwin Gonzalez signing

The Boston Red Sox have made a smart move on in free agency by signing utility infielder Marwin Gonzalez to a deal. 

While countless Boston Red Sox fans remain heartbroken and furious at the club for trading away Andrew Benintendi, the front office went ahead and made a smart move to lesson the pain for everyone.

Per a report, Boston and free-agent infielder Marwin Gonzalez have agreed to a new deal. Gonzalez was also receiving interest from the Toronto Blue Jays and others, but has shut things down and decided to play this upcoming season at Fenway Park.

The Boston Red Sox made a wise move in going after Marwin Gonzalez

Gonzalez spent the first seven years of his career with the Houston Astros before joining the Minnesota Twins in 2019. He spent two campaigns with the AL Central club, smashing 15 homers in 2019 and adding five more in 2020 during the shortened 60-game season.

Now, he’ll be heading to the AL East for the first time where he’ll look to make a strong impact on the Red Sox. Fans in Boston indeed have been bummed this week after Benintendi was traded to Kansas City. Folks are still sad over Mookie Betts heading to Los Angeles.

While Gonzalez won’t come in and make everyone forget about those two leaving town, he’s a stud infielder and can help Boston out at multiple different positions when needed. At the dish, Gonzalez has a career average of .261 and has 96 homers to his name.

For Boston, the team is hoping to wipe away the terrible memories of finishing in last place of the AL East standings in 2020. With Alex Cora back in town, fans are looking forward to a bounce-back season.

The addition of Gonzalez should only help in that regard.
