Trevor Lawrence had a special play for Kobe Bryant at his Pro Day.

Former Clemson quarterback Trevor Lawrence had his Pro Day on Friday morning that had 17 NFL teams in attendance to see him put on a show.

The Jacksonville Jaguars and new head coach Urban Meyer had the best seat in the stadium as Lawrence unleashed more than 50 throws on the morning. And one of those throws was named after former Los Angeles Lakers star Kobe Bryant.

On his play sheet, Lawrence had a “Kobe” which is an eight-yard stop route. It would be even more fitting if it was an eight-yard fade route considering his art of the fadeaway jumper. In any event, this was a nice gesture from Lawrence to pay tribute to the fallen star who died in a tragic helicopter crash a little more than a year ago.

It’s clear that Lawrence has the Mamba Mentality when he takes the field and in his preparation. He’ll be the No. 1 pick in the 2021 NFL Draft of the Jaguars and hopes to have a career as long, fruitful and successful as that of Kobe’s in the NBA.

The expectations and hype surrounding Lawrence are something Kobe could have related to when he was a prep star at Lower Merion high school in Ardmore, Pennsylvania before being a first-round pick in the NBA Draft. Now, Kobe wasn’t the No. 1 overall pick but when you’re drafted out of high school and the Lakers execute a draft-night trade to bring you to a team expected to win NBA championships, the pressure is there.

Kobe handled the pressure as well as anyone as he matured in the NBA and it’s expected Lawrence will handle the heat that comes with playing quarterback for a franchise coming off a 1-15 season. Lawrence was the No. 1 recruit out of high school and won a national championship as a freshman.

This isn’t new for Lawrence and if he takes that Mamba Mentality with him through his NFL career, it’s likely he’ll wind up in the Hall of Fame in his sport, just like Kobe, who he honored at his Pro Day.
