When it comes to who sports fans think is the GOAT, the United States is pretty split on the topic.

One week ago Sunday, quarterback Tom Brady won his seventh Lombardi Trophy after the Tampa Bay Buccaneers defeated the Kansas City Chiefs 31-9 in Super Bowl 55. As soon as the clock struck zero, football fans began anointing Brady as the greatest of all-time, as he surpassed Michael Jordan’s six NBA championships.

Considering that this is such a heated debate, it makes you wonder — how does the United States determine who is the GOAT?

BetOnline.ag collected all of the geotagged Twitter data of all 50 states and created a map of “the Greatest GOAT” according to each state. And the results are very diverse.

Brady leads with 20 states

When tallying up the number of states each athlete won, Brady is the winner of the debate with 20. Meanwhile, there is a tie for second-place and both are basketball stars. Jordan and Los Angeles Lakers star LeBron James hold 11 states each. The only other athlete to hold multiple states is tennis star Serena Williams with four (Washington, Minnesota, Maryland and Connecticut).

For the final four states, they all went to a different NFL quarterback. The state of California goes to Joe Montana, who won four Super Bowls for the San Francisco 49ers. Wisconsin goes to, of course, Green Bay Packers quarterback Aaron Rodgers. Former Indianapolis Colts quarterback and 2021 Pro Football Hall of Famer Peyton Manning takes Indiana. Finally, former Denver Broncos quarterback and current president of football operations John Elway nabs Colorado.

So there you have it, Twitter believes that Brady is the greatest athlete of all-time. Will this settle the debate? Of course not! Fans will continue to argue this to the end of time, because that is what we all do.
