Duke will look to win its first game without Jalen Johnson against Wake Forest.

The possibility of the Duke Blue Devils missing the NCAA Tournament is very real. An 8-8 record with just a 6-6 mark in ACC play isn’t good enough to be on the bubble without any quality wins and a bad situation got worse when one of the Blue Devils’ best players opted out of the season.

Freshman Jalen Johnson is no longer with the team after choosing to finish the year getting ready for a potential lottery selection in the NBA Draft. An injury derailed Johnson’s lone season in Durham and he has been coming off the bench since coming back, but now the Blue Devils will have to move forward without him.

With time running short to make a statement it was nice for Duke to get back in the win column on Saturday by topping N.C. State by 16 points. Matthew Hurt carried the Blue Devils in that game, scoring 24 points to help Duke get back to the .500 mark.

Mike Krzyzewski is undoubtedly aware that Saturday’s home game against Virginia is the Blue Devils’ last chance for a statement, but first Duke has to take care of business tonight against Wake Forest. These teams met once this season, with the Blue Devils winning by 11 at Cameron Indoor Stadium, with the action now shifting to Winston-Salem tonight.

The Demon Deacons have been improving lately, going 3-3 over their last six games, which is marked progress after an 0-6 start to ACC play. Finding a way to topple Duke would be equivalent to a March Madness win for Wake Forest so expect them to give their all in this game.
