Cubs bring back journeyman outfielder with Spring Training invite

The Chicago Cubs added to their outfield mix, albeit by taking a flier.

The Cubs signed Cameron Maybin to a minor-league deal. At this point in his career, Maybin is more of a defensive replacement at his best, or alternate fourth outfielder. That’s exactly what the Cubs will expect of him should he make the roster.

Maybin played in 42 games for the Tigers and Cubs last season, hitting near the .250 mark consistently despite the threat of COVID-19. He’s never been much of a power threat, but does provide speed on the basepaths and has a decent enough batters eye to  increase his OBP over the past decade.

The Cubs current starting outfield consists of Joc Pederson, Ian Happ and Jason Heyward. Maybin won’t be given a starting opportunity over any of them, but Happ in center feels like a weak link. Maybin’s experience maneuvering in center could come in handy at Wrigley Field this season.
