Kansas City Chiefs have no business re-signing these 3 players

The Kansas City Chiefs will go back to the drawing board to ensure they win the Super Bowl next season. If they want to, they simply can’t re-sign these three players.

The Kansas City Chiefs were hoping to be the first team to repeat as Super Bowl champions since the New England Patriots did so back in the early 2000’s. It looked like an attainable feat for a relatively stacked team like the Chiefs. However, the Chiefs fell back down to reality on the world’s biggest stage.

In Super Bowl 55, the Chiefs were schooled by Tom Brady and the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, losing 31-9. That’s right, even with Patrick Mahomes at the helm, the Chiefs could not score a single touchdown against Tampa Bay’s defense.

Now, the Chiefs will spend their offseason trying to build upon their roster with very limited cap space available to them. Kansas City has a total of 16 players hitting the open market, but some are better to leave alone. Here are three players the Chiefs have no business in re-signing this offseason.

Given that the Chiefs were the defending Super Bowl champions, they held the advantage in terms of bringing in big-name players looking to win a ring. Case in point — running back Le’Veon Bell.

The former Pittsburgh Steelers running back spent a season and a handful of weeks in his four-year, $52.5 million contract with the New York Jets. After trying to explore a trade, the Jets ultimately decided to release Bell from his deal, allowing him to join a team of his choosing. So, he opted to sign with the Chiefs for the remainder of the 2020 campaign. It was more of a luxury signing than anything for the Chiefs, as they mostly used rookie Clyde Edwards-Helaire and Darrel Williams over Bell.

Through nine regular-season games, Bell recorded 254 rushing yards and two touchdowns on 63 carries, while also catching 13 passes for 99 yards. Bell was a non-factor for the Chiefs in the playoffs, as he tallied six rushing yards on two carries through three games.

Based off the team’s usage of Bell, it makes little to no sense for Kansas City to bring him back on another deal. Let’s not forget that the Chiefs will be getting back Damien Williams, Super Bowl 54 hero, next season, so there is no further need for Bell’s services.
