Cam Newton on playing for Bill Belichick: ‘He dope as s**t’ (Video)
By John Buhler
Cam Newton is a big fan of Bill Belichick after only working one year with him.
Cam Newton has a ton of respect for New England Patriots head coach Bill Belichick.
The free-agent quarterback appeared on the I Am Athlete podcast, discussing his 2020 campaign spent in Foxborough. In only one season, he grew very fond of his head coach. “There were times last year, I knew I was about to get pulled. I’m a realist,” said Newton. “I think Bill Belichick is the most misunderstood person in all of sports.” … “He’s dope as s**t. Like, he is a cool dude.”
Nobody knows the history of football like Bill Belichick does
While he may be notoriously off-putting to the media, for those who know Belichick, they seem to really like the guy. He is a wealth of knowledge about the game of football. I mean, his late father was the godfather of scouting when he worked for the United States Naval Academy. Newton saw first-hand the depth of knowledge Belichick has for football. He was blown away by it last season.
As for if Newton returns to New England on a second contract, that remains to be seen. While he is a former NFL MVP and Heisman Trophy winner, Newton is on the wrong side of 30 and has not had a good season since 2017 when he was with the Carolina Panthers. New England may look to move on from him, but for the time being, Newton is certainly a serviceable stop-gap starter.
No matter what happens, Belichick will always be cool in Newton’s eyes because “he dope as s**t”.
