MLB rumors: 3 teams bold enough to take a chance on Yoenis Cespedes
By Scott Rogust
Who doesn’t love a good reunion?
Cespedes started his career with the Oakland Athletics in 2012 and made a huge impact that caught the eyes of MLB fans across the globe. In his first season, Cespedes slashed .292/.356/.505 with 23 home runs and 82 RBI. While those numbers were tremendous, he just happened to debut the same year as Mike Trout. Tough break.
The 2014 campaign was Cespedes’ best, as he recorded a .256 batting average an .767 OPS, while hitting 17 home runs and 67 RBI in 101 games. While he did make the All-Star team, Cespedes was traded to the Boston Red Sox in exchange for pitcher Jon Lester and outfielder Jonny Gomes.
Through his nearly three seasons with the club, Cespedes accumulated a .262 batting average, .788 OPS, 66 home runs and 229 RBI.
The AL West division is set to be a wide open race in 2021. It is unknown if Cespedes will be able to return to his pre-injury form, but it would not hurt Oakland to take a chance on signing him to a deal. Plus, it would be cool to see Cespedes don an Athletics uniform again.
