Mark Cuban would pay $1 million for NBA Top Shot of Luka Doncic’s game-winner vs. Clippers
Dallas Mavericks owner Mark Cuban is so enamored with Luka Doncic’s game-winning 3-pointer against the Clippers he’d pay $1 million for the NBA Top Shot version of it.
Close your eyes for a second and think of your favorite NBA highlight.
Now consider how much you’d pay for that moment. If you have as much money as Dallas Mavericks owner Mark Cuban, it might be $1 million.
Cuban appeared on Colin Cowherd’s podcast The Volume and answered some rapid-fire questions including which NBA Top Shot he’d pay big bucks for. He picked Luka Doncic’s game-winning 3-pointer in Game 4 against the LA Clippers last season.
Mark Cuban is a big fan of the NBA Top Shot concept
If you don’t know what an NBA Top Shot is, you may not be alone. It’s a relatively new but trendy piece of the collectibles game.
Put simply, a Top Shot is like a trading card, only it’s entirely digital and the card itself is a highlight. If you play EA’s Madden, it’s a bit like buying packs of cards in Madden Ultimate Team. You’re not looking for players to use. You’re looking for highlights to trade.
So when Cuban says he would pay $1 million for Doncic’s game-winner, he means he’d pay $1 million for this but in licensed form.
Cuban already owns $600 worth of Top Shot collectibles, according to USA Today. He owns 50 in total, including a Doncic moment. Whether or not it’s the Doncic moment is unknown.
The Mavs owner believes in this market. In that same piece, he proposed non-fungible tokens (NFTs) like Top Shot “could turn into a top 3 revenue source for the NBA over the next 10 years.”
The assertion rings more true when you discover collectors have been willing to pay $208,000 for a single LeBron James moment. Maybe there will be a $1 million Top Shot someday.
