UNC basketball is coming off a bad loss and really needs to find a way to beat Florida State to boost their NCAA Tournament resume.

The coronavirus pandemic has led to a highly unusual college basketball season, resulting in plenty of games that have been postponed due to issues within a program over the virus. North Carolina has dealt with that two weeks in a row and opted to take the unusual approach of adding a non-conference game in the middle of February.

The move paid off with a win over Northeastern but backfired this week when a slumping Marquette team came to Chapel Hill and knocked off the Tar Heels on Tuesday. The Golden Eagles, who entered the contest with a .500 record, shot nearly 52 percent from the floor and handed North Carolina a disastrous loss in a game they didn’t have to play.

The defeat pushes the Tar Heels closer to the NCAA Tournament bubble, an area they don’t want to be given the thin nature of their resume. One good way for Roy Williams’ club to undo the damage of that loss is to find a way to knock off Florida State today.

Florida State basketball is trending toward the top of the ACC for a while now, including a four-game winning streak that was highlighted by a blowout win over Virginia. Miami was the latest victim for Florida State this week, which blew out the Hurricanes 88-71 earlier this week.

This game is the best opportunity for the Seminoles to keep improving their resume during the regular season, with a shot at the two-line still in play depending on the movement of other teams in that area. North Carolina simply has to win this game to try and avoid falling further into the bubble mess.
