Smith made himself into the No. 1 overall pick in the 2005 NFL Draft over his final two years at the University of Utah, under a coach named Urban Meyer who was just starting to be a recognized name. Meyer is of course now back in coaching (again), and taking his first shot at the NFL, with the Jacksonville Jaguars.

The No. 1 overall pick is going to be Trevor Lawrence to the Jaguars, but Gardner Minshew will be gone as a backup option barring something unforeseen. So there’s a void to fill on the roster.

A couple years ago, when Smith was at a game in Washington, Meyer was right next to him in the owner’s box as a guest of wide receiver Terry McLaurin (who played for Meyer at Ohio State). The two clearly are still close.

With the looming inevitability that Washington was going to cut him, a reunion with Meyer in Jacksonville has been easily tabbed as the most likely scenario for Smith to keep his career going. That can now be a reality once he’s officially available. Smith may survey all his options, and he should absolutely do so.

But a deep tie, and an ideal role as what would amount to him being Meyer’s hand-picked mentor for Lawrence, makes Smith signing with the Jaguars feel like a formality.
