Patrick Mahomes will be sidelined for about three months as he recovers from toe surgery he had after the Super Bowl.

The Kansas City Chiefs are hopeful Patrick Mahomes will be healthy to participate in the team’s minicamp later this spring. If he’s still not fully recovered from the toe surgery he had on Feb. 10, he’ll be 100 percent ready to go for training camp in the summer.

“It’s a three-month recovery, so we’re hopeful [Mahomes returns] somewhere around that mandatory minicamp if we have it,” general manager Brett Veach said. “We certainly think by training camp he’ll be ready to go and we’ll be smart with him.”

Mahomes played through the injury and said it wasn’t a factor in the Super Bowl loss to the Buccaneers. He was running for his life during the game and didn’t appear to be slowed or hobbled in the least.

Chiefs hopeful Patrick Mahomes will be ready for minicamp

The biggest reason Mahomes was running for his life in that game was because of the injuries to offensive tackles Eric Fisher and Mitchell Schwartz.

Veach says Mahomes’ recovery and rehab won’t be as lengthy or extensive as his personal protectors, but he is hopeful the two book-ends will be ready for training camp in late-July.

“I would probably say Pat’s ahead of them just because of that type of injury and a quicker recovery,” Veach said. “Hopefully we’ll have all three ready to go by training camp.”

Expect the Chiefs to be ultra-conservative with the trio. There is no need to rush Mahomes back to take some snaps and make some throws in shorts in a minicamp. The Chiefs know who he is and what he’s capable. There’s no reason whatsoever to risk the $500 million franchise.

The same holds true for Fisher and Schwartz this offseason. They are so vital to the success of the offense and keeping Mahomes upright and with a clean pocket with which to throw from so they’ll take it easy with them in training camp and make sure they get plenty of veterans off days and are easing them back into action. The most important thing is having them ready for the grind of a full regular season. You don’t win a Super Bowl in August.
