5 players Jets should draft in the first round
1. Zach Wilson, QB, BYU
Why yes, we have arrived at the number-one player the Jets should draft in the first round. Somewhat unsurprisingly, this designation goes to BYU’s Zach Wilson.
Now, with the four significant *options* that Douglas has at quarterback to pick from, this means each *option* will have its backings.
Some will say Wilson did not play great competition, so Fields should be drafted over him. Others will bring up Fields’ struggles and, at times, ill-advised decision making. Another group will say neither option should go as high as pick two, so trade for Watson. Finally, the last group will want to give Darnold a chance under a new coaching staff.
However, Wilson seems to be the most logical and potentially likely option. Yes, it may seem like a gamble to select him so high due to his conference.
Well, here is one endorsement of Wilson that has some people rather giddy. Steve Young, yes, that Steve Young, said Wilson plays LIKE Patrick Mahomes. No, he did not say he IS Mahomes. Instead, Young wanted to get the point that Wilson seems to make any throw in the book, which is a similar trait that Mahomes has, across.
That is fun, right? Wilson is mobile, he can move around and make throws, and he seems to be someone who could fit into this Shannan-like system in New York with LaFleur.
ESPN has Wilson listed at 6-feet 3 and 210 pounds. He is a big quarterback who can add more muscle. At BYU, he had 56 touchdown throws in three seasons. His best campaign was 2020 as a junior when he had 3,692 yards, 33 touchdown throws and three picks while completing 73.5 percent of his throws. He also punched in 10 rushing scores.
Wilson has the potential to be a star, and he should be the first option on Douglas’ list for who to take at pick two.
