Duke basketball is in a must-win situation to keep their NCAA Tournament streak alive as the Blue Devils take on rival UNC in the latest installment of college basketball’s fiercest rivalry.

The college basketball season has given us plenty of firsts thanks to the coronavirus pandemic but few would have believed one of them would be a Duke-North Carolina matchup with both teams squarely on the NCAA Tournament bubble. The situation is far more desperate for the Blue Devils, who could see a 24-year NCAA Tournament streak come to an end at the hands of their bitter rivals.

Duke basketball enters having lost two straight, including a critical defeat against Georgia Tech on Tuesday that could function as a bubble tiebreaker between the ACC schools. The Blue Devils simply had no answer for Moses Wright, who scored 29 points and grabbed 14 rebounds to will the Yellow Jackets to a critical victory.

The tournament math simply doesn’t add up right now for Mike Krzyzewski’s team, which is 11-10 on the season with few quality wins and a handful of questionable defeats. A loss to the Tar Heels would drop Duke to 11-11 on the season, meaning they would need to win the ACC Tournament to claim the conference’s automatic bid in order to extend their March Madness streak.

This contest is also a big deal for North Carolina, which ceded some of the good will they earned from a win over Florida State by going to the Carrier Dome and losing to Syracuse on Monday. The two-point defeat likely cost the Tar Heels a seed line, which isn’t good for a team that was close to the bubble to begin with, and a loss to Duke could push Roy Williams’ squad down into First Four territory.

These two teams met a month ago in Durham with North Carolina leaving Cameron Indoor Stadium with a 91-87 win. The stakes have only increased since then, meaning we could be in for a thriller with two bitter rivals fighting for their bubble lives.
