Jose Canseco boldly accuses Mark McGwire of being a cheater

Jose Canseco is now accusing Mark McGwire of corking a bat before every MLB game he played.

Don’t expect a Bash Brothers reunion involving Jose Canseco and Mark McGwire anytime soon.

In the late 1980s and early 1990s, there was not a more iconic power duo at the plate than Jose Canseco and Mark McGwire. The Bash Brothers dominated the opposition en route to three straight AL pennants from 1988 to 1990, winning the 1989 World Series as stars for the Oakland Athletics. Too bad Canseco and McGwire are not on good terms these days. Here is a reason why.

While Canseco burned just about every bridge possible in his 2005 tell-all book Juiced, McGwire did serve as an MLB hitting coach for eight seasons with three different franchises in the 2010s. Though both sluggers’ legacies are forever tarnished by their steroid usage, Canseco throwing McGwire under the bus feels incredibly sad. Then again, so is allegedly corking a baseball bat.

While there is no condoning what either of these infamous power hitters did in their prime to get an edge, keep in mind that they played baseball in a different era. The league was clueless about the rampant cheating ruining their sport. 20-something years later, every National Baseball Hall of Fame ballot feels like some variation of an antiquated witch hunt. We all pay a price for it, sadly.

Even if McGwire allegedly corked his bat before every game, that does not change his perception.
