Alabama, Georgia in mix for former Clemson CB Derion Kendrick
By John Buhler
Former Clemson standout Derion Kendrick is garnering a lot of attention in the transfer portal from some SEC football heavyweights, including Alabama and Georgia.
Derion Kendrick is a hot commodity in the transfer portal, one that the Alabama football team or the Georgia football program would love to get their hands on for 2021. Kendrick was dismissed by Clemson head coach Dabo Swinney at the end of February.
The former five-star recruit from South Carolina has been linked to several programs while in the portal. Those include Alabama, Florida, Georgia, TCU and Texas While Florida and Georgia seem like the two favorites to land Kendrick, there is a chance he could end up joining the defending national champions down in Tuscaloosa. Either way, he projects to go to a major Power 5 player.
Why would Derion Kendrick transfer to either Alabama or Georgia for 2021?
What makes Georgia such a potentially great landing spot for Kendrick is multi-faceted. The Dawgs are ready to compete for a national championship right away. He also plays in a position group Georgia was depleted by the 2021 NFL Draft. Let’s also not overlook that Georgia faces Clemson in their first game of the year. These southeastern rivals will clash in nearby Charlotte.
While there is more potential opportunity at Georgia, what makes Alabama an intriguing landing spot for Kendrick is he could replace Patrick Surtain II and start opposite of Josh Jobe at cornerback. Since Kirby Smart’s Georgia team has never beaten Nick Saban’s Crimson Tide, he may want to hedge his bet to be on the winning side of a possible 2021 SEC Championship matchup.
For as long as Kendrick stays in the portal, he will be linked to teams like Alabama and Georgia.
