Duke basketball has to win against Boston College to keep its NCAA Tournament hopes alive.

It certainly feels unusual for Duke to be on the outside looking in during Championship Week, but the Blue Devils have no one to blame for their current predicament besides themselves. A three-game losing streak to end the regular season has taken the Blue Devils off the bubble, meaning their only path to the NCAA Tournament is to claim the ACC’s automatic bid in Greensboro this week.

Saturday’s defeat to North Carolina dropped the Blue Devils to 11-11 on the season and 9-9 in ACC play, a very middling resume for an at-large team. The Tar Heels jumped out to a 42-26 lead in the first half as Duke was flat to start the game, turning the game into a rout very quickly.

The only path Duke has to make its 25th consecutive NCAA Tournament is winning the ACC Tournament, meaning they will have to win five games in five days to get the job done. Today’s matchup against Boston College will be the only game where the Blue Devils are favored so they need to take advantage of it by picking up an easy win.

The Eagles were the ACC’s worst team this season, going 4-15 overall and 2-11 in conference play. Head coach Jim Christian was fired a few weeks ago and Boston College won once after he got let go, dealing with a COVID pause along the way as well.

These two teams met back in early January at Cameron Indoor Stadium with Duke hanging on for dear life to beat the Eagles by a point. Mike Krzyzewski didn’t coach in that game due to contact tracing procedures, something that could be a big help to Duke in the rematch.
