Kansas basketball has a win under its belt in the Big 12 Tournament and can advance to tomorrow’s final with a win over Texas.

Update: Kansas vs. Texas has been canceled

In the hours before the originally scheduled tipoff, Kansas learned that one of its players had tested positive for COVID-19.

As a result, the Big 12 tournament game against Texas has been canceled. Kansas it out of the Big 12 tournament and attention now turns towards its availability for the NCAA Tournament scheduled to start next Friday.

See original post below.

The Big 12 Tournament has the feel of a heavyweight title fight as each game features NCAA Tournament quality between loaded teams. Seven Big 12 teams were ranked in the AP Top 25 this week and five of those squads could land inside the Top 16 seeds on Selection Sunday, including Kansas and Texas, who will square off tonight in a semifinal matchup.

The Jayhawks made it seem like the absence of David McCormack due to COVID protocols wouldn’t be a big deal after jumping out to a massive first-half lead over Oklahoma. Things got interesting in the second half when the Sooners rallied but Kansas held on for a 69-62 win to advance.

Ochai Agbaji and Marcus Garrett led the way for the Jayhawks, combining for 43 points as Kansas shifted to a perimeter-oriented gameplan without McCormack. It will be interesting to see if that formula can hold up today against a much bigger Texas team.

The Longhorns were battle-tested in their quarterfinal matchup, outlasting Texas Tech 67-66 in a thriller that came down to the final seconds. Guard Matt Coleman III was the hero for Texas, scoring 19 points, including the go-ahead free throws with 1.8 seconds to go to seal the win for Shaka Smart’s team.

Texas has had its way with Kansas this season, sweeping the season series, including a huge rout at Allen Fieldhouse in January that put the Longhorns on the map as a national title contender. The loss of McCormack could be a big deal in this game since Texas can attack the paint at will with Greg Brown and Kai Jones.
