The Chicago Cubs shortstop pulled off a highlight-reel play during a spring training game against the Milwaukee Brewers.

The Chicago Cubs are a couple of weeks away from Opening Day, where they start off the 2021 regular-season at home against the Pittsburgh Pirates. In spring training, shortstop Javier Baez has shown he is more than ready for the upcoming campaign.

During Friday’s game against the Milwaukee Brewers, Baez attempted a sliding stop on a ground ball hit by outfielder Derek Fisher. As Baez picked up the ball, he threw it between his legs to Kris Bryant to get Orlando Arcia out at second base. And he did so without even looking.

Cubs: Javier Baez pulls off ridiculous trick play with ease

Jason Heyward, who was doing an in-game interview with the Marquee Sports Network, saw the play live and could not help but exclaim at how smoothly Baez pulled off that play.

Baez is coming off a relatively down year at the plate last season. In 59 games, Baez only managed to slash .203/.238/.360 while recording eight home runs and 24 RBI. But, he did make up for it in the field. Baez recorded a .968 fielding percentage (eight errors in 253 defensive chances) and 34 double plays. As a result Baez was rewarded with the first Gold Glove of his career.

2021 is the final year in which Baez will be under team control with the Cubs. Once this season ends, Baez will join fellow shortstops Francisco Lindor, Carlos Correa and Trevor Story in free agency. Baez has the chance to prove his worth to the Cubs and other suitors this season. He gave them a sneak peak with this impressive trick play.
