Kentucky basketball lost forward Cam’Ron Fletcher to the transfer portal, ending a difficult freshman season for the former four-star prospect.

With a 9-16 season in the books, it should come as no surprise to see Kentucky basketball players involved in the transfer portal.

Freshman forward Cam’Ron Fletcher made the jump after a debut campaign featuring limited playing time and the wrong kind of headlines.

“Although this season did not go the way any of us wanted to, being a part of the Kentucky men’s basketball program has been a great experience,” Fletcher said in an official statement from the program. “I would like to thank all of my coaches and teammates and especially the Big Blue Nation for making my time here so special. I grew so much this season, not only on the court but as a man, and I’ll be forever thankful for this opportunity. However, with careful thought and consideration, my family and I have decided it is in my best interest to explore other options and enter my name into the transfer portal.”

Head coach John Calipari credited Fletcher for maturing as a teammate and player, offering his support for him going forward.

Cam’Ron Fletcher has long looked like a transfer candidate

Fletcher was a four-star prospect in the class of 2020 out of Saint Louis. He ranked No. 70 in the 247Sports composite and No. 15 among small forwards. He was part of Kentucky’s top-ranked haul, including Brandon Boston Jr., Terrence Clarke, Isaiah Jackson, Devin Askew, and Lance Ware.

That class didn’t produce the same fireworks as previous collections of one-and-done talent. Boston led the team with 11.5 points, but Clarke played in just eight games.

Fletcher appeared in nine contests with one start. He averaged 1.7 points per game and will be known more for his troubles than his contributions.

After he had nine points, five rebounds, three assists, and a steal in his debut against Morehead State, things went downhill. As playing time dwindled, the player appeared more and more frustrated. That spilled over on the bench as the Wildcats played North Carolina. Fletcher was visibly upset during the loss. Calipari told reports after the game that he was frustrated with his playing time.

Fletcher penned an apology after the game on Twitter, but the head coach still asked him to step away from the team and get his head right.

He came back in February. However, there was no happy ending. He played eight minutes in the final month of the season.
