The Chiefs made a big splash by signing offensive lineman Joe Thuney and Patrick Mahomes was quick to express his excitement on Twitter.

The Kansas City Chiefs may have surprised some fans recently when they decided to release both Mitchell Schwartz and Eric Fisher. But it now appears the team had a plan all along to revamp the offensive line after Patrick Mahomes got chased around like a JV quarterback in the Super Bowl.

So what was the plan? One piece of the offensive line puzzle was solved Monday with the reported signing of guard Joe Thuney. The former Patriots’ star is now heading to Kansas City on what is reported to be a five-year, $80 million deal.

Mahomes was quick to react with excitement when the news dropped Monday afternoon.

Patrick Mahomes gets an elite protector in Joe Thuney

This is a huge addition for the Chiefs made possible with the restructuring of several deals so far this offseason. Mahomes had his own deal restructured as well.

Super Bowl 55 was one of the most bizarre games in Mahomes’ young career. He was chased around all game by the Tampa Bay Buccaneers defense and threw two interceptions in the ugly 31-9 loss. There was rarely a snap where he wasn’t sprinting away from a defender almost immediately.

But the Chiefs were without both Schwartz and Fisher in that game. Now Thuney shows up hoping to solidify the interior of the line at a time when the Chiefs can get back to work and focus on the tackle spots.

Mahomes can do wonders with a football. Fans saw him make near-impossible throws in the Super Bowl simply out of necessity. But the Chiefs can’t win titles if he isn’t protected. That is a recipe for actual disaster and could get the young star injured.

Mahomes is rightfully excited by the Thuney signing. Now he will sit back and hope his team can find two tackles to ensure his continued success in 2021.
