Cowboys: Dallas brings back top corner on multi-year deal

The Dallas Cowboys are building their defense after taking care of Dak Prescott.

Jerry Jones finally broke the bank for Prescott, signing the quarterback to the contract he desired and then some. After some untimely jokes regarding Prescott “stealing” from him, it turns out Jones still has some money to spend after all.

Cowboys cornerback and former University of Michigan product Jourdan Lewis had hit the free agent market after his rookie contract ran up. Jones would rather not see Lewis suit up in another uniform, signing him to a multi-year contract and taking him off the market permanently.

It wasn’t long ago that the Cowboys defense was considered a strength of their team. Yet, the failure of the linebacking corps to develop and the loss of some key players has stunted that growth. Add in the Mike Nolan fiasco, in which several young components actually regressed, and we can see how Dallas got here.

Lewis, for one, is capable on the outside. However, he’s going to have to prove the Cowboys right for giving him a three-year contract, rather than letting him sign elsewhere for what might’ve been a one-year prove it deal.

We’ll see if Jerry Jones’ confidence pays off in this regard. The only owners/GM in the NFL (regardless of what he calls himself) has made some bold moves in the past. This, on a rather affordable deal that gives the Cowboys a little more flexibility to continue adding via free agency, is only a small risk.
