JuJu Smith-Schuster is back in Pittsburgh, despite what many termed an impossible cap situation.

Where the Steelers got the funds for Smith-Schuster, we may never know (cough: Steven Nelson trade?), but he’ll remain on the roster at least for next season. By signing Smith-Schuster, the Steelers are giving quarterback Ben Roethlisberger his favorite target for what will likely be a final season for the veteran quarterback.

Smith-Schuster has evolved his game at the professional level to a catch-and-run target. In the Steelers offense in particular, his average yards-per-catch went down considerably last season. Much of that can be attributed to Roethlisberger’s arm strength, and Randy Fichtner’s offense limiting the deep passing game. As it turns out, those decreased statistics hurt his value on the free agent market.

Because of this, Smith-Schuster is remaining in Pittsburgh, where he’s really appreciated.

JuJu Smith-Schuster could sign long-term in Pittsburgh, just not this season

The Steelers cap situation becomes much more optimistic after this season. Roethlisberger’s contract, as well as several other pricey veterans, only run through the 2021 season. With that in mind, by signing on a one-year prove it contract, Smith-Schuster can stay with the Steelers beyond this year on a multiyear contract should he please.

Pittsburgh is home to Smith-Schuster. He made that clear by choosing the Steelers over, say, the Baltimore Ravens and Philadelphia Eagles, where he could have made more money in the short-term.

Smith-Schuster is valued in the Steelers offense. They need him to succeed in Roethlisberger’s final year under center (assuming that does end up being the case). Despite the financial push from elsewhere, JuJu is staying in the Steel City.
