Roman ‘Chocolatito’ Gonzalez on the Baez twins and Estrada afterthoughts
Roman ‘Chocolatito’ Gonzalez talked about his twin sparring partners, Leonardo and Eduardo Baez, ahead of their Ring City USA boxing bouts.
Just 10 days after his captivating rematch with Juan Francisco Estrada, Roman ‘Chocolatito’ Gonzalez was in good spirits talking to the media about his twin sparring partners.
Gonzalez (50-3, 41 KOs) and Estrada engaged in a possible Fight of the Year candidate on March 13. Unfortunately, the fight was marred in controversy after the judges ruled unanimously in favor of Estrada despite Gonzalez winning every meaningful CompuBox punch stat.
The real controversy was in judge Carlos Sucre’s 117-111 scorecard for Estrada in a close fight. The WBA suspended Sucre a day after the fight.

Despite taking a loss in what many thought should be a victory for Gonzalez, Gonzalez talked to the media on Tuesday, March 23, in support of his twin sparring partners Leonardo and Eduardo Baez ahead of their respective matches on a Ring City USA card on Thursday, March 25.
“They are very strong, and they know how to combine their punches very well,” Gonzalez told FanSided during a media call. “On top of that, they have a great work ethic. They always push forward in the ring and have great conditioning, so that is a great factor.”
Leonardo (18-3, 9 KOs) and Eduardo Baez (18-1-2, 6 KOs) are 25-year-old identical twins from Mexico who fight as super bantamweights. Leonardo fights Carlos Caraballo Rodriguez, and Eduardo fights Abimael Ortiz on the Ring City USA fight card.
Roman ‘Chocolatito’ Gonzalez gave Leonardo and Eduardo Baez a ringing endorsement ahead of their Ring City USA contests.
Gonzalez sparred with the Baez twins in the lead up to his rematch with Estrada. He said that he saw similarities between the twins’ fighting style and Estrada.
“Yes, definitely,” said Gonzalez. “The combination of punches and their strength. They’re very strong. They always push forward like Estrada also. They have great conditioning, which is definitely a great factor.”
Gonzalez spoke highly of the twins and was a gentleman when discussing the outcome of his fight with Estrada. He hasn’t watched the fight in its entirety, but he saw highlights and is happy with his performance.
“Only highlights,” said Gonzalez. “The game plan that we focused on in the gym was well executed, but the decision wasn’t there.
“I feel well. I feel happy and loved with my family. I am happy with the outcome of my preparation even though the decision wasn’t there.”
Gonzalez’s praise of the Baez twins should bolster their odds in their respective matches. His comments about Estrada and the rematch show his class and professionalism. He’s a four-division champion who’s a lock for the boxing hall of fame. Hopefully, he will land a trilogy bout with Estrada soon.
