Astros: What Francisco Lindor’s new contract means for Carlos Correa
Carlos Correa spoke with Francisco Lindor and it is clear he is ready to get paid a lot of money next offseason.
Francisco Lindor held firm in his demands and was handed a 10-year, $341 million deal by the New York Mets. This comes at a time when several elite shortstops are looking for new deals by next offseason. Houston Astros shortstop Carlos Correa is a key name on that list.
The Astros reportedly offered Correa a new deal worth $125 million. That is offensive after seeing what Lindor received. Astros beat reporter Brian McTaggart shared a tweet about Correa and Lindor that proves Houston either needs to up its offer or forget about any hope of an extension.
Francisco Lindor deal raises market for shortstops like Carlos Correa
The Lindor deal has totally reset the shortstop market. That is great news for the likes of Correa, Corey Seager, Javier Baez, and Trevor Story.
Correa specifically is friends with Lindor and the two likely talked about how the Astros shortstop should follow a similar route and get the most money he can. The Mets shortstop didn’t just raise the bar. He broke right through the ceiling.
Correa is already being open about how the Astros’ offer was basically a joke to him. Now it would be hard to imagine him even listening to an offer worth below $200 million.
Lindor gets all the attention for his bubbly personality and four All-Star Game appearances. However, Correa’s career WAR of 26.9 is right there with Lindor’s of 27.9 in over 170 fewer games. Injuries have slowed Correa’s ascent, but he remains an elite player at his position.
Teams around MLB had to be furious with the Mets for paying Lindor so much money. That is just part of the business and next year’s shortstop sweepstakes should see Correa make significantly more than he would have if not for Lindor sticking with his gut and waiting for that enormous offer.
