The Pirates took home an Opening Day victory over the Cubs at Wrigley Field and reminded fans of the final result with the help of a flag.

The Pittsburgh Pirates are not projected to do much of anything in 2021. But they started the year hot with two runs in the top of the first inning in Thursday’s Opening Day win over the Chicago Cubs. That lead was never given up.

The Pirates ruined the day for Cubs fans and will be hoping to do the same all season long. Everyone in Pittsburgh was happy, and that included the team’s broadcasters. A quick troll even came about because of the difference in flags flown by both teams following the game.

Pirates get in a quick Cubs troll after Opening Day win

Fans in Pittsburgh know all about flying the Jolly Roger flag following a Pirates victory. The Cubs have a different tradition, flying either a “W” or “L” in a tradition that dates back decades back before instant news updates.

In 2021, it is easy to be trolled about flying a big “L” flag following a loss.

One loss to open the season isn’t going to worry Cubs fans too much. The real concern centers around the trio of Kris Bryant, Anthony Rizzo and Javier Baez all needing new contracts. A loss to the Pirates won’t change the focus.

Meanwhile, fans in Pittsburgh should be thrilled about the season-opening win. Taking down the Cubs is always fun, and doing so with another young and up-and-coming roster is always a reason for optimism.

Getting in a good troll after a win at Wrigley is something Pirates fans can always rally around.
