Seahawks won’t trade Russell Wilson without great QB in return

It seems obvious, but the Seattle Seahawks won’t trade Russell Wilson unless they get a quarterback to their liking in return.

Russell Wilson went against his typical grain to criticize what the Seattle Seahawks are doing around him early in the offseason. He hasn’t asked for a trade, but his agent offered a list of teams he would accept a trade to. The Chicago Bears, a surprising member of the list, even made a significant offer the Seahawks turned down.

Even as things trend toward a split, likely in 2022, the Seahawks know they have one of the top quarterbacks in the league and they won’t trade him for less than value. And that value isn’t far from, and may even be equal to, what the Houston Texan could get for Deshaun Watson. That is to say, multiple high draft picks and a starting caliber player or two.

The Seahawks want a replacement for Russell Wilson if they trade him

During an appearance on Get Up Monday morning, ESPN’s Adam Schefter talked about the situation with Wilson and the Seahawks. Upon further review, one initial reaction was a little aggressive regarding Seattle’s desire to move on.

Here’s what Schefter said.

"Seattle’s not going to trade Russell Wilson unless it knows and loves the quarterback it’s getting in return."

As expected, this is where Chicago’s offer clearly fell short. They had to have offered Nick Foles, to clear the depth chart and offload some salary. Foles is no one’s idea of a quarterback they’d “know and love.” The Seahawks balked, as they should have.

If the Seahawks do trade Wilson, they’ll need a solid quarterback (or the opportunity to draft a top quarterback prospect) in return. One of the teams on his list of desirable spots has a quarterback they could part with, and if a deal happened this month some teams with a high draft pick could grab Seattle’s interest.

The odds Wilson is traded this offseason remain remote. The Seahawks have a solidly high asking price, as they should.
