Chicago White Sox DH Yermin Mercedes blasted a home run 485 feet as his unexpectedly strong start to the 2021 season only got more incredible.

Yermin Mercedes’ name isn’t just for show. The White Sox rookie sure looks like a luxury car.

The 28-year-old has had a dream start to his stint as Chicago’s DH. It only got better on Tuesday against the Royals when he destroyed a pitch for his second big league homer in six games.

He couldn’t have hit it sweeter in his home debut.

He even delivered a delicious bat flip to complete the highlight.

It wasn’t just a shot. It was an absolute moon shot. Only one White Sox player since 2015 has hit one longer.

Best of all for the White Sox, Mercedes’ home run came immediately after Yoan Moncado smacked a two-run homer into the stands.

One ridiculous home run for a little-known rookie would be impressive enough, but Mercedes is leading MLB in batting average at .565. His OPS of 1.409 is fourth in the league.

And those numbers are without his stats from Thursday. Through six innings, Mercedes was 2-for-3.

Thus continues an unbelievable run for Mercedes, who had been a minor league catcher up to this season. He wasn’t even guaranteed a spot on Chicago’s roster. Now he’s setting White Sox records.

The Chicago Sun-Times produced a litany of examples to show how historic this stretch has been for Mercedes. He was the first MLB player to start a season 8-for-8 as a DH. He had more hits than any player modern-era player in his first four starts. Among White Sox, his 12 hits were the most to start a season ever.

Mercedes already has a nickname for his fans: “The Yerminators.”

There will probably be a whole lot more of them the longer his hot streak goes on.
