Kirby Smart gives Georgia football fans some positive news about the wide receiver room.

After Saturday’s scrimmage, Georgia football coach Kirby Smart gave a positive update regarding his depleted receiver corps.

While it is apparent that No. 1 wide receiver George Pickens will be out for a while after suffering a torn ACL earlier in spring practice, it seems as though Jermaine Burton’s hyper-extended knee was not as serious as initially thought.

“He’s back running around doing some things,” Smart said. “He didn’t scrimmage, but he’s doing a lot more and getting more flexibility.”

With Burton expected to be the Dawgs’ No. 1 wide receiver option until Pickens gets back to 100 percent, Smart also gave us some good news regarding the healthy of Marcus Rosemy-Jacksaint and Dominick Blaylock. Rosemy-Jacksaint tore his ACL hitting pay dirt vs. Florida last season. Blaylock has torn his ACL twice since the Dawgs beat Baylor in the 2020 Allstate Sugar Bowl.

“[Rosemy]’s running around doing walkthroughs, doing conditioning. You see him on the side getting to run; you know he’s close to being healthy,” Smart said. “Dom is running, so you know you have guys there that have experience and have done a good job. It’s really a valuable time for the younger guys — the other guys get an opportunity.”

Georgia football: Kirby Smart sees his receiving corps being on up and up

While the passing game had long been an issue during the Smart era of Georgia football, it seems as though they have finally gotten the quarterback position right with JT Daniels under center. He can do things with the football Georgia has not seen since Aaron Murray last starred in Athens. However, seeing receivers succumb to one injury after another is very concerning for the Dawgs.

Though arch rival Florida is expected to regress this year, Georgia has two glaring weaknesses with its roster’s construction: health in the receiving corps and depth in the defensive backfield. Since Smart is a former All-SEC safety during his Georgia playing days, he will coach up that particular position group. As for the receiving corps, time will be the biggest indicator for success.

If Georgia can avoid any more damage this spring, then the Dawgs can get back to Atlanta in 2021.
