Chicago White Sox hurler Carlos Rodon goes down in MLB lore by throwing a no-hitter.

Rodon was not the pitcher White Sox fans would’ve predicted to secure such a feat this series, with Lucas Giolito throwing a gem just the other night. Yet, Cleveland’s offense had no chance from the opening pitch, with Rodon notching seven strikeouts through nine innings of nearly-flawless work.

In what’s expected to be a consequential season for the White Sox, Rodon has already perhaps provided them with their most memorable accomplishment of the 2021 campaign.

No pitcher had thrown a perfect came in over eight years heading into Rodon’s outing on Wednesday night. While Roberto Perez’s HBP robbed Rodon of that moment, a no-hitter isn’t half bad, either.

Giolito threw a no-hitter just last season, making history in his own right.

The White Sox hurler kept his pitch count down, and got plenty of help from 2020 AL MVP Jose Abreu, who made one hell of a play in the ninth inning to save the perfect game attempt. Abreu risked injury and nabbed the Indians baserunner by less than a fingertip by sliding towards the bag.

Perez’s HBP, meanwhile, is sure to make headlines in its own right. He had plenty of time to get out of the way, but Perez knew he was in a position to take one for the team, so he stood pat while the baseball plunked him in the foot.

It’s a painful reminder that baseball quite literally is a game of inches.
