The Cubs decided to send pitcher Adbert Alzolay to the alternate site as part of a long list of moves.

The Chicago Cubs are dealing with a tough situation early in the 2021 season. Two coaches and a handful of players are on the COVID-related injured list as the team hopes to avoid any sort of outbreak.

A long list of roster moves was made Wednesday and one stuck out in particular. That was the decision to send young pitcher Adbert Alzolay down to the alternate site.

Cubs demote Adbert Alzolay early in 2021

Alzolay has made two starts this season and has allowed a combined seven earned runs in 10.1 innings. He was able to go at least five innings in both outings, but the Cubs lost both games.

The swap here is bringing up Shelby Miller from the alternate site. He posted a 1.50 ERA in spring training and can start or pitch in relief. That type of versatility will help the team especially after Kyle Hendricks was scratched from his start this week.

Fans should not worry about Alzolay losing his job permanently. He got the start Monday and since he is a starter it makes sense to bring up someone like Miller while Alzolay rests.

Alzolay is listed as the No. 7 prospect in the Cubs system as he looks to get in a full season of work and no longer be considered a rookie. He should be back up soon enough once the Cubs’ COVID situation clears up.

The team entered play Wednesday with a 5-6 record in what appears to be a highly competitive National League Central division. No one wants to be demoted, but Alzolay just needs to keep working. He will be back soon.
