The Seahawks are reportedly meeting with Aldon Smith as the veteran defender looks to continue his second act in the NFL.

Aldon Smith is a former No. 7 overall pick who lost four years of his career due to suspension. He made his return in 2020 with the Dallas Cowboys and managed to record five sacks in his comeback season.

Smith is now 31 years old, but did spend years away from the game. That makes him an intriguing free agent and the Seattle Seahawks are reportedly meeting with Smith on Wednesday.

Seahawks pursuing Aldon Smith in free agency

Ian Rapoport puts it best. This is truly a potential low-risk, high-reward signing for the Seahawks. Smith is likely only going to get a one-year deal and it should be cheap. He still need to prove he can be available on a regular basis and also produce as a pass rusher.

The Seahawks’ offseason got off to a dramatic start once Russell Wilson trade rumors began to swirl. Those have now settled and the team will look to repeat as NFC West champions in 2021.

Smith is not someone to show up and change the entire look of the defense. Those days are behind him. But he is a veteran player who showed up in Dallas last season and started all 16 games after not playing since 2015.

Seattle has had a quiet offseason and that is part of the reason why Wilson was, and likely still is, so unhappy. The hope is that the team does not need a major addition to contend in 2021. Adding Smith would be a nice small move that could pay huge dividends.

However, the success of the team may depend on whether the offensive line can protect Wilson in 2021.
