Astros: Alex Bregman sues San Antonio resort over wedding deposit

Houston Astros third baseman Alex Bregman sued a San Antonio resort after they refused to return deposit for canceled wedding.

Like many in 2020, Houston Astros third baseman Alex Bregman’s plans were upended by the coronavirus pandemic. While Bregman and wife Reagan were married this past December, they are now suing their initial wedding destination.

The Bregmans have filed a lawsuit against the La Cantera Resort and Spa in San Antonio, Texas for refusing to pay back their $80,000 wedding deposit placed this past August when the couple canceled their planned wedding at the resort.

“When we booked the wedding, cases were lower and we hoped the pandemic was subsiding,” Bregman said in a a press release, via Fares Sabawi of KSAT.com. “However, as cases surged in Texas and across the country leading up to the wedding date, it was clear we had to make plans for a smaller ceremony with fewer guests.”

The press release (via the Houston Chronicle) notes that the Bregmans tried to reschedule the wedding due to guests not being able to travel due to Center for Disease Control’s coronavirus guidelines and the rise in COVID-19 cases. In response, the resort asked for $40,000 to cancel. Meanwhile, the Bregmans point out that the contract says the resort must return the deposit in case of a cancelation caused by COVID-19.

Instead of waiting, the couple got married in a small ceremony at Reagan’s parents home in Katy, Texas.

Bregman has played in just nine games for the Astros this season, where he has recorded two home runs, six RBI, four runs scored and 10 hits in 35 at-bats. On Wednesday, Bregman was placed on the injured list alongside second baseman Jose Altuve, designated hitter Yordan Alvarez, catcher Martin Maldonado and infielder Robel Garcia for “undisclosed reasons.”
