NFL Mock Draft: What the first-round looks like if 49ers pass on Mac Jones
By Brad Weiss
While some may feel that Drew Lock will be the future in Denver, if they get to the No. 7 pick, and Mac Jones is still on the board, the Broncos could make a move. In this mock, the Broncos trade up two spots, landing the seventh pick, and bringing in the former Alabama quarterback to replace Lock.
Lock has had some moments in Denver, but he is wildly inconsistent, and Jones may be too good a player to pass up on. Sure, they have to get rid of some draft capital to move up, but if Jones can bring his talents to the next level, it will be well worth it.
The Carolina Panthers hold the No. 8 overall pick in this year’s draft, but after trading for Sam Darnold, they no longer need a quarterback. Instead, they trade this pick to the New England Patriots, who are in desperate need to find the man who will eventually be the long-term answer in their organization at quarterback.
Now holding the No. 8 pick, the Patriots take a chance on Trey Lance, a player who comes from a small school, but has big-time potential. This is a kid who can make all the throws, is solid at reading coverages, and would benefit from sitting behind Cam Newton for one season before taking over.
The No. 9 pick in our latest mock draft belongs to the Detroit Lions after trading with the Denver Broncos, and they hit the lotto by adding Ja’Marr Chase from LSU. Some feel that Chase is the best wide receiver in this draft class, and if he falls to the Lions at No. 9, then they get an elite option for new quarterback Jared Goff.
It remains to be seen what Goff is going to be at the NFL level, even after leading the Los Angeles Rams to the Super Bowl a few years ago. Chase is the kind of security blanket that he needs to get off to a strong start in the Motor City, as he has superstar talent written all over him.
