USC football: Clay Helton statement on death of former Trojans OL Chris Brown
USC football head coach Clay Helton shared his heartbreak at the news that former Trojan offensive lineman Chris Brown passed away.
It was a sad day for the USC football community on Saturday as the Trojan Family learned of the death of former lineman Chris Brown.
Head coach Clay Helton, who coached at USC for the entirety of Brown’s tenure, took to Twitter to express his grief over the sudden loss.
“Heartbroken to hear the news that we lost Chris Brown today. Our thoughts and prayers go out to the entire Brown family,” Helton said in a statement. “Chris meant so much to so many. Great person, player, teammate and Trojan. God bless my friend. You are forever in our hearts.”
Brown came to USC as a four-star recruit in the class of 2014 out of Loyola HS. He appeared in 53 games while starting 29 times.
His emergence at guard in 2017 helped propel the Trojans to the Pac-12 Championship. He started again in 2018 and earned All-Pac-12 First Team honors from Pro Football Focus.
The two-time USC Offensive Lineman of the Year will always be remembered for an absolutely dominant performance in a blowout win over Stanford at the Coliseum.
Chris Brown had talents beyond the football field with USC
Brown wasn’t just a capable football player. He was a gifted guitarist whose talent inspired a feature in the Los Angeles Times in 2017.
He wowed quarterback Sam Darnold with his ability to pick up songs at that drop of a hat.
Unfortunately, this tragedy wasn’t the only one to hit the Trojans recently. Another former offensive lineman Max Tuerk died last summer while hiking with his father near Los Angeles.
