Chella Choi of the Republic of Korea plays a tee shot on the 14th hole during the first round of the LPGA LOTTE Championship at Kapolei Golf Club on April 14, 2021, in Kapolei, Hawaii.

This photo was taken on the island of Oahu during the LPGA Lotte Championship. The course was located inland so there were plenty of beautiful florals around, especially on the 14th hole where there were stunning yellow-flowered trees. I chose the afternoon to photograph when the light was head-on to hopefully add to the color of the trees. In this picture, veteran golfer Chella Choi played a tee shot. Chella has always had a strong follow-through with her tee shots and it makes for great shapes. I believe the combination of the yellow trees and her follow-through form made this photo especially stunning.

Matthew Boyd of the Detroit Tigers pitches in the sixth inning against the Houston Astros at Minute Maid Park on April 13, 2021, in Houston, Texas.

This photo of pitcher Matthew Boyd of the Detroit Tigers was taken by using a shutter drag technique. There are times later on in the game when hitting slows and pitch counts can drag on, so this is usually a time when I try and get creative with frames. By putting a shutter around 1/15th, the frame will have the motion of the camera and the subject. It’s important for me to get the face sharp in these types of photos or else it just comes out, out of focus.

Jake Paul celebrates after defeating Ben Askren in their cruiserweight bout during Triller Fight Club at Mercedes-Benz Stadium on April 17, 2021, in Atlanta, Georgia.

I was in the ring photographing the aftermath of the Jake Paul vs Ben Askren fight. Jake Paul was very emotional after his quick first-round KO of Ben Askren. He was throwing himself on the floor crying and hugging his handlers and family. I have seen this situation before and was anticipating that he may jump up on the ring rope to throw his hands up towards the fans. The question was which corner he would pick? I watched Paul’s body language and the second he motioned towards one of the corners, I jumped out of the ring and placed myself outside the turnbuckle. I had my wide-angle lens ready, and he put his hands up and then screamed. As Paul was doing this, the stadium exploded behind him in flashing lights and fireworks which was a nice touch to the photo.

Stephen Curry of the Golden State Warriors is doused with water by Juan Toscano-Anderson of the Golden State Warriors after their win over the Denver Nuggets at Chase Center on April 12, 2021, in San Francisco, California. Curry passed Wilt Chamberlain as the Golden State Warriors’ all-time leading scorer during the first quarter of their game.

This was one of those nights that it was sad that there were no fans in attendance. Steph Curry had an amazing game after passing Wilt Chamberlain for the Golden State Warriors all-time leading scorer during the first half of the game. All night I tried to focus on Curry and I got a few shots that I liked of him. I stuck around at the end of the game while he was doing a TV interview because I noticed off to the side of the bench that teammate Juan Toscano-Anderson was unscrewing a bunch of water bottles from a cooler. It was just a few minutes later that he snuck up behind Curry and doused him with the cold water.
