The Los Angeles Lakers need point guard Dennis Schröder to keep playing at this high level.

Dennis Schröder has helped keep the Los Angeles Lakers afloat with its two star players Anthony Davis and LeBron James missing significant time this spring due to injury.

Schröder’s latest performance vs. the struggling Orlando Magic on Monday night was a phenomenal one. He had 21 points on 10-of-18 shooting from the floor and 10 assists in his double-double. For the Lakers to repeat as NBA champions, Davis knows this is the type of production they are going to need to get out of Schröder down the stretch and in the playoffs.

“We need him to be the same Dennis,” said Davis. “He’s making the right reads, he’s making great plays, he’s finishing, shooting the ball. … We don’t want him to fall back when Bron comes back, even though Bron does have the ball a lot. But we still want him to push the pace, and get in the paint, attacking, finding seams, finding guys for open shots … making those right passes and those right plays.”

“That’s what we’re gonna need from him in order for us to win a championship.”

Dennis Schröder will have to keep playing up for the Los Angeles Lakers

The Lakers will enter Wednesday night’s road game vs. the on-fire Washington Wizards as the fifth-placed team in the Western Conference. While seeding does not really matter when you have two of the top 10 players in the league in Davis and James, the Lakers need its supporting cast to step up when it matters come playoff time. Schröder’s rise in recent years shows he can do it.

Until proven otherwise, the Lakers are the presumptive favorite to come out of the Western Conference and win back-to-back NBA Finals. While the Eastern Conference has a trio of teams capable of winning a league championship, the Brooklyn Nets, the Milwaukee Bucks and the Philadelphia 76ers remain unproven on the biggest of stages. The Lakers do have what it takes.

If Schröder can play like this when it counts, the Lakers should be the favorite to win it all again.
