Tennessee football coach Josh Heupel needs a quarterback to build his program around. Now he’s got one with the commitment of four-star Tayven Jackson.

Tennessee football just landed their quarterback of the future.

Four-star quarterback Tayven Jackson committed to the Volunteers on Wednesday, becoming the third commitment for head coach Josh Heupel in the class of 2022.

The 6-foot-4, 195-pound prospect ranks No. 326 in the 247Sports composite with miles of upside to his game.

The Vols can thank Peyton Manning for helping to push Jackson over the edge towards Tennessee. Heupel name-dropped the legendary quarterback to great effect.

“Talking to Coach Heupel, he mentioned Peyton Manning mentioned my name to him and said ‘are we going to get that recruit we need him,’ and I was like dang that’s pretty cool,” Jackson told 247Sports.

Knowing that Peyton Manning knows your name has got to be pretty awesome for a young quarterback.

Jackson needs to prove worthy of the interest.

Tayven Jackson has serious potential for Tennessee

A two-sport star at Center Grove HS in Indiana, Jackson brings a great deal of athleticism to the table, along with ideal size for the position.

He improved drastically from his sophomore to junior year in high school, throwing for 1,756 yards and 17 touchdowns, helping the Trojans to a 14-0 record in 2020. Those numbers are gaudy like many other high school quarterbacks out there, but Jackson operates in a run-first offense and has attracted attention for his potential more than anything.

Tennessee brought in four-star dual-threat quarterback Kaidon Salter in the class of 2021. Heupel has a strong track record coaching up quarterbacks, which he’ll need to prove this year as he searches for a starter. Looking into the future, the team should be set up for a fun competition when the time comes for the two passers.
