Broncos don’t draft Justin Fields, Aaron Rodgers dream is alive
The Broncos had a chance to draft Justin Fields and silence rumors about a trade for Aaron Rodgers. Instead, Denver left the door wide open for a big trade.
Justin Fields seemed like the obvious pick for the Denver Broncos when they went on the clock with the No. 9 overall selection in the 2021 NFL Draft. Instead, Denver opted to nab cornerback Patrick Surtain. That leaves Denver with a notable vacancy at the quarterback position.
Specifically, the Broncos have left the door wide open to make a seismic trade for Aaron Rodgers. The future Hall-of-Famer recently expressed his desire to move away from Green Bay due to a disagreement about his next contract.
The Aaron Rodgers dream is still alive
Denver believes they are one good quarterback away from turning their roster into Super Bowl contenders. That’s why rumors immediately popped up connecting the Broncos with a move for Rodgers. On the surface, it’s a match made in heaven from Denver’s perspective.
Of course, drafting Fields at No. 9 would have silenced any conversation about the Broncos acquiring Rodgers. He would have immediately become the favorite to become the team’s starting quarterback sooner rather than later. Going for a cornerback like Surtain still leaves Denver looking for an upgrade at the game’s most important position.
The biggest obstacle still standing between Denver and acquiring Rodgers is Green Bay’s lack of willingness to engage any team in meaningful trade discussions. The Packers believe they can come to terms with Rodgers on a new contract once cooler heads prevail. The Broncos might test the team’s resolve by making a strong trade offer in the coming days.
No matter what, the Broncos missed out on a clear chance to solidify their quarterback options with the No. 9 pick. Expect rumors connecting them with a sensational trade for Rodgers to intensify until Rodgers re-ups with the Packers. This saga is far from over.
