The Dallas Cowboys helped out the Philadelphia Eagles and screwed the New York Giants with a draft-day trade.

The NFL Draft is fraught with peril for teams making choices knowing their moves could impact their division opponents for years. The Dallas Cowboys pulled off a rare divisional trade this year, swapping picks with the Philadelphia Eagles, allowing them to steal Devonta Smith right out of the laps of the New York Giants.

The move netted an extra third-round pick for the Cowboys, who received no. 84 overall, ESPN’s Adam Schefter reports. The move also allowed Dallas to dictate the landing spot for Smith, a wide receiver they knew they would be dealing with in their division since reports indicated the Giants were likely to take him if he was available with the very next pick.

The move also helps the Eagles, who get to reunite Smith with one of his former college quarterbacks in Jalen Hurts, who played with him in 2017 and 2018. The move makes logical sense for the Cowboys since the Eagles aren’t as big a threat to them as the Giants, so blocking them from landing Smith is a shrewd move that helped Dallas net an extra draft pick.

The Cowboys had to pivot quickly after the top two cornerbacks in the draft went off the board right before they picked. This move was a smart one from Jerry Jones given the circumstances.
