The New England Patriots got their quarterback of the future in Mac Jones. Will he start right away over Cam Newton?

After rumors saying the New England Patriots would trade up in the NFL Draft to take a quarterback, they ended up staying put at 15th-overall and one of the five best quarterbacks fell to him in Mac Jones.

The Alabama product was rumored to go as high as third overall to the San Francisco 49ers, but they ended up taking North Dakota State’s Trey Lance. Now, Jones is headed to New England.

Jones will eventually be the heir apparent to Tom Brady, one of the greatest of all time, but will be take the reigns from day one? That’s for Cam Newton to decide.

Mac Jones faces a tough competition with Cam Newton in his first training camp.

Newton was up and down last year for the Patriots. He had some good games early in the season, but by the end of the season, he couldn’t hit an out route. It seems like his bout with COVID-19 earlier in the season really took a lot from his game. The Patriots still went 7-9 and they were in the playoff race until December.

The Patriots re-signed Newton in the offseason for a decent contract. He still has the athleticism and he can be decent in an offense that’s built around him. However, the Patriots are going to be tempted to put Jones in the lineup as soon as possible.

Newton needs to be a lot better than he was at the end of the season if he’s going to beat out the rookie who’s nipping at his heels. The Patriots spent a ton of money on wide receiver and tight end this offseason. They added Nelson Agholor, Kendrick Bourne, Jonnu Smith, and Hunter Henry to an offense that was desperate for weapons. Now, they added the one piece they still needed. Jones is going to be a very interesting quarterback in the league.

Jones very well could start from day one, but if Newton plays like he did at the beginning of last season, he will be the starter. Josh McDaniels already has an offense built for him. He has plays that give the Patriots an edge. His rushing ability is one of the best at the position.

However, there will be plays made specifically for Jones. This Patriots offense might be a lot of fun.
