The Green Bay Packers finally made a move to draft a wide receiver for quarterback Aaron Rodgers, but will it be enough to keep the quarterback around?

It finally happened. The Green Bay Packers invested a Day 2 selection on a wide receiver.

Aaron Rodgers may not be celebrating the pick since he really wants to leave Green Bay, but he can at least appreciate the gesture from a front office that has declined to get him highly-rated targets in the draft.

The Packers traded up with Tennessee in the third round to go get Clemson’s Amari Rodgers. They gave up a third- and fourth-round pick, according to Adam Schefter.

Amari Rodgers being Aaron Rodgers’ newest receiving target has some poetry about it.

Amari Rodgers is the Packers’ earliest receiver pick in a long time

Rodgers is the first wide receiver selected by Green Bay since J’Mon Moore in 2018. He’s also the highest-drafted since third-rounder Davante Adams in 2015.

Adams worked out pretty well as a pick. He’s now a four-time Pro Bowler, most recently setting career highs with 18 touchdowns and 98.1 touchdowns per game in 2020.

Aaron Rodgers will probably wonder why it took the franchise so long to figure out that investing in another third-rounder like Adams, or even a second- or first-rounder, might yield similar results.

Amari Rodgers, the son of Ravens wide receivers coach Tee Martin, had a breakout year in 2020 with Clemson. He led the team with 77 catches for 1,020 yards and seven touchdowns.

He operates best in the slot but may also have the skills to work outside.

There’s still no guarantee Aaron will ever throw a pass to Amari. The Packers still need to do a lot of convincing to make sure the quarterback is leading their offense in 2021. Otherwise, it should be Jordan Love celebrating the pick.
