2. Drafting Kellen Mond as Kirk Cousins’ eventual successor

Kirk Cousins is under contract with the Vikings for the next two seasons, which means that the team needed to look into a succession plan. Reports indicated that the Vikings were looking to trade up to the 11th overall spot with the New York Giants, possibly for Ohio State quarterback Justin Fields. Whether that was true or not, the Vikings lost the bidding war to the rival Chicago Bears, who went on to take the Buckeyes signal caller. Despite that, the Vikings did address the quarterback position on Day 2.

With the Tampa Bay Buccaneers starting a run on quarterbacks with the final pick of the second round by selecting Florida’s Kyle Trask, the Vikings followed suit near the top of the third by selecting Texas A&M quarterback Kellen Mond. Of course, Mond is not going to win the starting job right away, which is a good thing.

Mond does need developing at the NFL level, but if his tenure with the Aggies proved anything, it is that he can be a true dual threat under center. Through four seasons, Mond tallied 9,661 passing yards, 71 passing touchdowns and 801 completions on 1,358 attempts, all of which were school records. Additionally, Mond rushed for 1,609 and 22 touchdowns on 438 carries.

It’s always good to have a plan for the future at the quarterback position, and the Vikings took a step in that direction with the selection of Mond.
