Medina Spirit won the 147th Kentucky Derby to give trainer Bob Baffert the all-time record for victories in “the most exciting two minutes in sports.”

The lesson casual and fanatical horse racing fans learned in the 2021 Kentucky Derby was don’t bet against Bob Baffert.

The trainer just has that magic touch when it comes to horses.

Courtesy of Medina Spirit, Baffert set a record for the most Kentucky Derby victories by a single trainer in history. He has now trained the winner seven times, breaking a tie with Ben Jones.

Here’s how he did it:

Medina Spirit, John Valazquez and Bob Baffert got the Kentucky Derby win

Medina Spirit wasn’t the favorite to win the race, that title was reserved for Essential Quality, who finished fourth. The 15-1 underdog who was purchased for just $1,000 just had a stellar race.

Jockey John Valazquez got the win astride Medina Spirit, producing the same result as last year when he rode Authentic to victory. He now has four wins to his name, behind only two other jockeys.

Mandaloun made it a tight race but couldn’t pull ahead of the winner in the home stretch. Hot Rod Charlie also challenged and finished third.
