NFL power rankings: Buccaneers, Chiefs still lead way into 2021
The team added veteran quarterback Ryan Fitzpatrick this offseason in hopes that he could bring a little more oomph to an offense that gained the third-fewest yards in the league this past year. But the reigning NFC East champions do have a talent-laden defensive unit that added linebacker Jamin Davis (Kentucky) in the first round in April. Head coach Ron Rivera now has former Panthers’ offensive weapon Curtis Samuel at his disposal again.
Mitch Trubisky is now a member of the Buffalo Bills. And the quarterback room in the Windy City not only features former Super Bowl MVP Nick Foles but veteran Andy Dalton and promising 2021 first-round pick Justin Fields. That kind of competition hopefully leads to a better performance for an offense that finished 26th in the league in total yards per game. Chicago’s defense had its ups and downs but once again Matt Nagy’s struggled to force turnovers.
The club’s new sideline leader is former Rams’ defensive coordinator Brandon Staley and during his one year on the job that club allowed the fewest total yards and points in the league. He inherits 2020 NFL Offensive Rookie of the Year Justin Herbert, who put up big numbers and helped orchestrate a season-ending four-game winning streak. Rashawn Slater (1-Northwestern) bolsters an offensive line that added center Corey Linsley this offseason.
